150 Citizens Clear Nearly 5,000 Kg of Plastic and Trash in a 120-Minute Clean-Up Drive
In a powerful demonstration of citizen participation and community responsibility, nearly 150 citizens came together to clean the heavily polluted HLC Canal in Anantapur, which had become clogged with plastic and accumulated waste.
The first-of-its-kind community initiative, titled “Clean Drive for a Clean and Green Ananthapuram,” was jointly organised by Discover Ananthapuram, Rotary Club of Anantapur, SR Defence Academy and the youth of Anantapur, bringing together citizens from different walks of life with a common objective — to reclaim the city’s public spaces from waste and pollution.
Led by A. G. Anil Kumar, Founder of Discover Ananthapuram, the intensive clean-up activity continued for 120 minutes. During the drive, volunteers removed approximately six tractor loads of plastic and other accumulated waste, estimated at nearly 5,000 kilograms, from the canal and its surroundings.
The HLC Canal, an important water channel passing through the city, had witnessed the accumulation of large quantities of plastic and garbage over time. The condition of the canal had raised concerns among citizens about environmental pollution, public health and the long-term impact of indiscriminate dumping.
The success of the initiative was driven by the enthusiastic participation of several individuals and community groups. A. G. Venugopal Reddy and Sudheer from Rotary Club of Anantapur played an active role in mobilising participation and supporting the clean-up effort.
The enthusiastic involvement of Sohail, Nanda, Lokesh and the entire team of Anantapur Cockroaches added significant strength to the operation, with the group actively participating in removing plastic and accumulated waste from the canal.
Sanjeev Reddy and the team from SR Defence Academy also took an active part in the clean-up, contributing volunteers and manpower throughout the 120-minute operation. Their participation, along with that of the youth of Anantapur, helped turn the initiative into a large-scale citizen-driven cleanliness activity.
One of the major highlights of the programme was the active participation of the Anantapur Municipal Corporation’s Municipal Health Officer (MHO) and his team. Municipal officials and sanitation personnel joined the citizens on the ground and actively participated in the cleaning operation.
The participation of the Municipal Corporation team demonstrated the importance of citizen–government collaboration in tackling urban sanitation and environmental challenges. Rather than functioning separately, citizens, voluntary organisations and municipal officials worked together on the ground towards a common objective.
Speaking on the occasion, A. G. Anil Kumar, Founder of Discover Ananthapuram, said the initiative was not merely about cleaning the HLC Canal but about creating a sustained culture of citizen participation in keeping Anantapur clean and green.
He said the overwhelming response from citizens demonstrated that people are willing to contribute their time and effort when they are given an opportunity to directly participate in improving their city.
Anil Kumar announced that more such citizen-led cleanliness activities would be organised every week at different locations across Anantapur, with the objective of encouraging greater public participation and creating a continuous movement for a cleaner and greener city.
The clean-up drive also highlighted the importance of preventing waste from reaching canals and other public spaces in the first place. While removing thousands of kilograms of accumulated waste provides immediate relief, organisers stressed that responsible waste disposal and citizen vigilance are essential to ensure that such locations do not become dumping grounds again.
The HLC Canal clean-up has emerged as more than just a sanitation activity. It stands as a strong example of community participation, institutional cooperation and youth involvement, demonstrating how citizens, voluntary organisations and municipal authorities can work together to address urban environmental challenges.
The organisers expressed their gratitude to all 150 volunteers, Rotary Club members, the Anantapur Cockroaches team, SR Defence Academy, the youth of Anantapur and the Municipal Health Officer and his team for their active participation.
The initiative sent out a clear message to the city: when citizens come together with determination and municipal authorities extend their support, even long-standing urban cleanliness challenges can be addressed through collective action.
